Celebrating August in Amsterdam

Happy (nearly) August. There’s time to mourn what would have been Pride, Dekmantel, and the colourful streets of yesteryear, but far better to celebrate the awesome city we live in and the stoicism of the event organisers who continue to bring you fantastic things to do and ways to meet new people.

Here’s a mixture of our lovely hangouts and some of the best other things happening this week. Have browse around what’s on in Amsterdam, August week 1.

Free Writing Workshop

In a dusty drawer? Or a long lost corner of your brain? Perhaps crumpled in your bin. Wherever your writing projects ended up, now is the time to resurrect them. Janice is here to help. In this workshop, you’ll follow a series of exercises to help inspire creativity and practise the skills to get words on the page.

Experienced or just interested, be welcome.

Free Yoga Class

Who knew humans could look like that? If you want to find out how and are also frugal, stingy, and discerning then this bi-weekly yoga session is perfect for you. It’s hosted by Puck, an experienced yoga and martial arts instructor. He works on a donation basis for the sessions but you are more than welcome to just come and try it out.

It lasts for 1 hour, and consists of a short meditation, followed by bends twists, and inversions. Beginners and experienced warmly welcome.

Music and food @ De Ceuvel

One of the best loved and most hidden terraces in Amsterdam is planning a long evening of good food, good beer, and good tunes. Settle in to their sun-kissed courtyard by the water this Saturday. You can’t make reservations so secure your table in good time or make sure you choose able conversationalists as your partners for the corona queue.

Burro & Parmigiano Italian Deli opening

Burro and Parmigiano have been ever so mysterious about their grand opening. All we know is that there’s free food and free drinks on offer (as if we needed to know more). Head down there this Saturday to sample the creations of a brand new Italian deli right by Oosterpark, and support this excellent new business.

Sunday Market @ Westergas

The creativity of the Westergas project knows no bounds. Their Sunday market follows suit. Find everything from vintage clothing to ceramics, jewellery to organic food. It’s free entry and a lovely place to drop in even for a browse.

Free Outdoor Bootcamp

Introducing Smug Sundays – where you spend one hour with a pounding heart and sweaty forehead, and get to walk around for the rest of the day with annoying grin on your face for all those who stayed in bed eating dusty pringles.

Puck’s Sunday outdoor bootcamp in Flevopark has you covered on all bases: a short sharp shock for an hour, in a relaxed non-macho atmosphere.

Mindfulness, Truth & Nature of Mind

If you haven’t yet sampled the peace that meditation can bring to your life, Mindiverse’s bi-weekly session offers an opportunity to learn and begin to incorporate it into your day. It’s particularly of interest to those who want to go deeper and understand how mindfulness is situated within philosophy and neuroscience.

All welcome.
